Protecting Seniors and Adults with Disabilities: Adult Protective Services

March 01, 2018

Adult Protective Services restores the dignity and safety of adults with disabilities ages 18 to 59, and seniors who find themselves as victims of abuse and may have few resources to change their situations and protect themselves. These services are provided to residents of Maine, New Trier and Northfield Townships in the northern suburbs of Chicago which, together, comprise 14 communities. North Shore Senior Center social workers investigate an average of 240 cases annually, which include physical, emotional and sexual abuse as well as financial exploitation. Social workers investigate the most serious reports expeditiously, even in the middle of the night, and spend 30 days investigating each case. The average cost of processing a case is $1,600.

“Our goal is to keep our clients living safely in the community and ensure that they obtain the needed supports to reduce the risks of further abuse, neglect or exploitation,” said Holly Lichtman, LCSW, supervisor of the program.
