Lending Closet for Durable Medical Equipment at North Shore Senior Center

January 05, 2017

At our Northfield location, North Shore Senior Center operates a Lending Closet where folks can borrow durable medical goods such as: walkers, canes, shower chairs, tub transfer benches, raised toilet seats and wheelchairs. There is no cost associated with borrowing the equipment, but it is important to note that our inventory fluctuates based on public demand. Last fiscal year we lent out almost 650 items through this free service.

If you are interested in borrowing durable medical equipment from our Lending Closet, you can visit the Administrative offices at the Northfield campus. Monday through Friday, Charlie Dubman, a dedicated volunteer, oversees the distribution of durable medical equipment from our Lending Closet. “We have everything,” he explains. “Wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, shower benches— even a device that can help you pull your socks up if you can’t bend over.”

Seniors and their families can borrow durable medical goods from the Lending Closet for several months, free of charge. This service is particularly valuable when someone is recovering at home after a hospital stay, a fall or an illness.

“I meet a lot of people and help them determine what they need. For example, I have to find out how tall they are in order to properly fit them with crutches,” Charlie says. “It keeps life interesting.”

In addition to his work with the Lending Closet, Charlie helps out with clerical and scheduling projects in our Northfield offices, and runs the audio for Men’s Club programs on Tuesdays.
