Fitness Center Enhances More Than Muscle Strength

July 02, 2015

Elizabeth Downie has been a member of the North Shore Senior Center’s Fitness Center since October, 2014. After moving to Winnetka from Michigan her daughter suggested she join the North Shore Senior Center. “The staff was so warm and gracious,” Elizabeth shared, “I came in for a tour and was immediately hooked!”

What really caught Elizabeth’s interest was the Fitness Center and the classes offered, especially the Better Balance class. The journey of improving her balance was challenging at first. “I felt uncertain about what I was doing, but almost instantly, both Jaimie Wall and Katie Morgan (instructors of the Better Balance classes) made me feel more comfortable. They’re both so encouraging and I understood their instructions easily.”

Better Balance has now become an important part of Elizabeth’s routine. “When I participate regularly, I notice that my body and confidence levels improve. I love the fact that I am now able to walk without my cane,” she said.

In addition to Better Balance class, Elizabeth also participates in personal training in the Fitness Center with trainer Katie Morgan. Tailored to improve balance and address issues of confidence, these training sessions focus on Elizabeth’s lower body strength, core strength, and balance training. “I still feel like I’m facing obstacles, but I do notice my strength is improving. A lot of my success has come from Katie, her encouragement, and her ‘drill sergeant’ ways.”
